Well the Nihil were not just any band of space pirates. They had a connection to the Force, and Marchion Ro, their leader, was a powerful user of the dark side. He could manipulate peoples emotions and thoughts, causing them to turn on each other.

Don't forget the Nihil had Gaze Electric weapons that could shoot down a starship, and powered by the same kyber crystals that power a light saber

It's so fascinating how different groups used the same things like the Force and Kyber crystals for very different things.
