Lovecraft’s relationship with his mom was a toxic mix of smothering affection and constant criticism. He felt fragile, ugly, and dependent. She kept him trapped in this love/hate dichotomy. We see this in his stories; isolation, helplessness, and the terror of being crushed by forces you can’t escape.
